RESUMO

Exosomes are a subtype of extracellular vesicle (EV) that are released and found in almost all body fluids. Exosomes consist of and carry a variety of bioactive molecules, including genetic information in the form of microRNAs (miRNAs). miRNA, a type of small non-coding RNA, plays a key role in regulating genes by suppressing their translation. miRNAs are often disrupted in the pathophysiology of different conditions, including eye disease. The stability and easy detectability of exosomal miRNAs in body fluids make them promising biomarkers for the diagnosis of different diseases. Additionally, due to the natural delivery capabilities of exosomes, they can be modified to transport therapeutic miRNAs to specific recipient cells. Most exosome research has primarily focused on cancer, so there is limited research highlighting the importance of exosomes in ocular biology, particularly in cornea-associated pathologies. This review provides an overview of the existing evidence regarding the primary functions of exosomal miRNAs and their potential role in diagnostic and therapeutic applications in the human cornea.

To investigate the associations between corneal curvature (CC) and other anterior segment biometrics in young myopic adults. In this retrospective multi-center study, 7893 young myopic adults were included. CC and other anterior segment biometrics were measured by Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam). CC was defined as SimK at central 3 mm area, and other anterior segment biometrics included white-to-white corneal diameter (WTW), central corneal thickness (CCT), corneal volume (CV) at 3 mm, 5 mm, and 7 mm area, anterior corneal astigmatism (ACA), posterior corneal astigmatism (PCA), anterior corneal eccentricity (ACE) and asphericity (ACAP), posterior corneal eccentricity (PCE) and asphericity (PCAP), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and anterior chamber volume (ACV). Univariate regression analyses were used to assess the associations between CC and other anterior segment biometrics, and multivariate regression analyses were further performed to adjusted for age, gender and spherical equivalent. CC was higher in patients of female gender and higher myopia (all P < 0.05). Eyes in higher CC quartiles had lower WTW, thinner CCT, lower CV at 3 mm and 5 mm, lower ACD, and lower ACV (all P < 0.001), but had larger ACA, larger PCA, less PCE and less PCAP (all P < 0.001), compared to eyes in lower CC quartiles. The trends of CV at 7 mm, ACE and ACAP were inconsistent in different CC quartiles. After adjusting for age, gender and spherical equivalent with multivariate linear regression, CC was positively correlated to CV at 7 mm (ßs = 0.069), ACA (ßs = 0.194), PCA (ßs = 0.187), ACE (ßs = 0.072), PCAP (ßs = 0.087), and ACD (ßs = 0.027) (all P < 0.05), but was negatively correlated to WTW (ßs = - 0.432), CCT (ßs = - 0.087), CV-3 mm (ßs = - 0.066), ACAP (ßs = - 0.043), PCE (ßs = - 0.062), and ACV (ßs = - 0.188) (all P < 0.05). CC was associated with most of the other anterior segment biometrics in young myopic adults. These associations are important for better understanding of the interactions between different anterior segment structures in young myopic patients, and are also useful for the exploration of the pathogenesis of myopia.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective is to develop a novel keratoconus image classification system that leverages multiple pretrained models and a transformer architecture to achieve state-of-the-art performance in detecting keratoconus. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Three pretrained models were used to extract features from the input images. These models have been trained on large datasets and have demonstrated strong performance in various computer vision tasks.The extracted features from the three pretrained models were fused using a feature fusion technique. This fusion aimed to combine the strengths of each model and capture a more comprehensive representation of the input images. The fused features were then used as input to a vision transformer, a powerful architecture that has shown excellent performance in image classification tasks. The vision transformer learnt to classify the input images as either indicative of keratoconus or not.The proposed method was applied to the Shahroud Cohort Eye collection and keratoconus detection dataset. The performance of the model was evaluated using standard evaluation metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score. RESULTS: The research results demonstrated that the proposed model achieved higher accuracy compared with using each model individually. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that the proposed approach can significantly improve the accuracy of image classification models for keratoconus detection. This approach can serve as an effective decision support system alongside physicians, aiding in the diagnosis of keratoconus and potentially reducing the need for invasive procedures such as corneal transplantation in severe cases.

BACKGROUND: The precision of anterior segment biometric measurements in eyes has become increasingly important in refractive surgery. The purpose of this study is to assess the repeatability of the automatic measurements provided by a new spectral-domain optical coherence tomograph (SD-OCT)/Placido topographer (MS-39, CSO) and its agreement with a swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) biometer (CASIA SS-1000, Tomey) in patients with myopia. METHODS: The right eye of 235 subjects was scanned 3 times with both devices. The evaluated parameters included central corneal radius of the steep meridian, central corneal radius of the flat meridian, mean central corneal radius, thinnest corneal thickness, central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, corneal volume and diameter. The intraobserver repeatability of the MS-39 measurements was calculated using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), within subject standard deviation, coefficient of repeatability, coefficient of variation and repeated-measures analysis of variance of the 3 repeated measurements. The agreement between the two devices was evaluated by 95% limits of agreement (LoA). RESULTS: The majority of the parameters acquired from MS-39 showed high repeatability. The repeatability of corneal diameter was slightly lower than the other measurements, although the ICC remained high. Agreement with the CASIA SS-1000 was good, indicated by the Bland-Altman plots with narrow 95% LoA values for all parameters assessed. CONCLUSIONS: The high repeatability of automatic measurements by the new device supports its clinical application in eyes with myopia, and the good agreement between the two devices indicates they could be used interchangeably for the parameters evaluated.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent diseases globally, and its prevalence is rapidly increasing. Most patients with a long-term history of DM present with some degree of keratopathy (DK). Despite its high incidence, the underlying inflammatory mechanism of DK has not been elucidated yet. For further insights into the underlying immunopathologic processes, we utilized streptozotocin-induced mice to model type 1 DM (T1D) and B6.Cg-Lepob/J mice to model type 2 DM (T2D). We evaluated the animals for the development of clinical manifestations of DK. Four weeks post-induction, the total frequencies of corneal CD45+CD11b+Ly-6G- myeloid cells, with enhanced gene and protein expression levels for the proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1ß, were higher in both T1D and T2D animals. Additionally, the frequencies of myeloid cells/mm2 in the sub-basal neural plexus (SBNP) were significantly higher in T1D and T2D compared to non-diabetic mice. DK clinical manifestations were observed four weeks post-induction, including significantly lower tear production, corneal sensitivity, and epitheliopathy. Nerve density in the SBNP and intraepithelial terminal endings per 40x field were lower in both models compared to the normal controls. The findings of this study indicate that DM alters the immune quiescent state of the cornea during disease onset, which may be associated with the progressive development of the clinical manifestations of DK.

Mucosal chemokines have antimicrobial properties and play an important role in mucosal immunity. However, little is known about their expression on the ocular surface. This study aimed to analyze the expression of the mucosal chemokines CCL28, CXCL14 and CXCL17 in corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells under in vitro dry eye (DE) conditions, and in conjunctival samples from healthy subjects and DE patients. Human corneal epithelial cells (HCE) and immortalized human conjunctival epithelial cells (IM-HConEpiC) were incubated under hyperosmolar (400-500 mOsM) or inflammatory (TNF-α 25 ng/mL) conditions for 6 h and 24 h to measure CCL28, CXCL14, and CXCL17 gene expression by RT-PCR and their secretion by immunobead-based analysis (CCL28, CXCL14) and ELISA (CXCL17). Additionally, twenty-seven DE patients and 13 healthy subjects were included in this study. DE-related questionnaires (OSDI, mSIDEQ and NRS) evaluated symptomatology. Ocular surface integrity was assessed using vital staining. Tactile sensitivity was measured with Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer, and mechanic and thermal (heat and cold) sensitivity using Belmonte's non-contact esthesiometer. Subbasal nerve plexus and dendritic cell density were analyzed by in vivo confocal microscopy. Conjunctival cells from participants were collected by impression cytology to measure mucosal chemokines gene expression by RT-PCR. Our results showed that HCE and IM-HConEpiC cells increased CCL28, CXCL14, and CXCL17 secretion under hyperosmolar conditions. The gene expression of CCL28 was significantly upregulated in conjunctival samples from DE patients. CCL28 expression correlated positively with symptomatology, corneal staining, heat sensitivity threshold, and dendritic cell density. CXCL14 expression correlated positively with age, ocular pain, conjunctival staining, tactile sensitivity, and image reflectivity. CXCL17 expression correlated positively with corneal staining. These results suggest that corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells could be a source of CCL28, CXCL14, and CXCL17 on the ocular surface and that CCL28 might be involved in DE pathogenesis.

Physiological wound healing of the cornea is a complex process and involves numerous multifactorial tissue processes. A proper wound healing, especially without the formation of light-scattering scars, is essential to preserve the integrity and function of the cornea. Misdirected wound healing is of vast clinical relevance as it can lead to corneal fibrosis and the loss of optical transparency with subsequent reduction of visual acuity, up to blindness. In addition to the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms, the knowledge of therapeutic concepts and options for treating corneal wound healing disorders and fibrosis is essential to counteract a permanent damage of the cornea as early as possible. Nowadays, various pharmacological and surgical options are available for treatment. The decision, appropriate selection and indication for the optimal treatment depend primarily on the genesis and clinical appearance of the corneal wound, fibrosis or scar. The treatment of wound healing disorders ranges from the use of topical therapy and supportive measures up to tissue replacement procedures. As long as the mechanical stability of the cornea is intact and wound healing processes are still ongoing, a pharmacological modulation is reasonable, which is discussed in this article.

Corneal nerve impairment contributes significantly to dry eye disease (DED) symptoms and is thought to be secondary to corneal epithelial damage. Transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) channels abound in corneal nerve fibers and respond to inflammation-derived ligands, which increase in DED. TRPV1 overactivation promotes axonal degeneration in vitro, but whether it participates in DED-associated corneal nerve dysfunction is unknown. To explore this, DED was surgically induced in wild-type and TRPV1-knockout mice, which developed comparable corneal epithelial damage and reduced tear secretion. However, corneal mechanosensitivity decreased progressively only in wild-type DED mice. Sensitivity to capsaicin (TRPV1 agonist) increased in wild-type DED mice, and consistently, only this strain displayed DED-induced pain signs. Wild-type DED mice exhibited nerve degeneration throughout the corneal epithelium, whereas TRPV1-knockout DED mice only developed a reduction in the most superficial nerve endings that failed to propagate to the deeper subbasal corneal nerves. Pharmacologic TRPV1 blockade reproduced these findings in wild-type DED mice, whereas CD4+ T cells from both strains were equally pathogenic when transferred, ruling out a T-cell-mediated effect of TRPV1 deficiency. These data show that ocular desiccation triggers superficial corneal nerve damage in DED, but proximal propagation of axonal degeneration requires TRPV1 expression. Local inflammation sensitized TRPV1 channels, which increased ocular pain. Thus, ocular TRPV1 overactivation drives DED-associated corneal nerve impairment.

Keratoconus eyes develop corneal decompensation more often compared to eyes with primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) following Descemet's membrane (DM) tear. This study was conducted to compare the posterior corneal morphology in areas with DM breaks with regards to DM and pre-Descemet's layer (PDL) between the two. In this cross-sectional comparative study, anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) scans of the posterior cornea of advanced keratoconus eyes with hydrops ( n = 12), PCG eyes with Haab's striae ( n = 15), and healthy control eyes ( n = 14) were compared for DM-PDL morphology. These were further corroborated by the histopathology of corneal buttons from keratoconus ( n = 14) and PCG ( n = 13) cases obtained following penetrating keratoplasty and compared with controls (enucleated retinoblastoma globes, n = 6) on light microscopy and collagen IV immunostaining. AS-OCT showed a thicker median DM/PDL complex in PCG (80 µm) versus keratoconus eyes (36 µm, P = 0.01; Kruskal-Wallis test). The median height and length of detached DM-PDL were significantly more in keratoconus versus PCG (145 µm, 1766.1 ± 1320.6 µm vs. 26.5 µm, 453.3 ± 303.2 µm, respectively, P = 0.012; Kruskal-Wallis test). Type-1 DM/PDL detachment (seen as a characteristic taut chord) in keratoconus (90%) was the most common morphological pattern versus intracameral twin protuberance (92%) following DM breaks in PCG. Histopathology confirmed thicker DM in PCG (median: 63.4 µm) versus keratoconus eyes (median: 33.2 µm) or controls (27.1 µm) ( P = 0.001; Kruskal-Wallis test). Greater height/length of DM/PDL detachment compounded by poor healing response (lower DM/PDL thickness) probably causes more frequent corneal decompensation in keratoconus eyes when compared to PCG eyes following DM tears.

ABSTRACT: Sjögren syndrome (SS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by destruction of mucosal glands resulting in dry eye and dry mouth. Ocular presentations can be heterogenous in SS with corneal nerves abnormalities that are structural, functional, or both. Some individuals present with corneal hyposensitivity, with a phenotype of decreased tear production and epithelial disruption. Others present with corneal hypersensitivity, with a phenotype of neuropathic pain including light sensitivity and pain out of proportion to signs of tear dysfunction. A similar correlate can be found outside the eye, with dry mouth predominating in some individuals while pain conditions predominate in others. Understanding how nerve status affects SS phenotype is an important first step to improving disease management by targeting nerve abnormalities, as well as inflammation.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe 3 cases of recalcitrant Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) that were successfully treated using in vivo corneal confocal microscopy (IVCM) to guide excimer laser ablation depth with adjunctive mitomycin C 0.02%. METHODS: Three patients diagnosed with AK did not respond to several weeks of intensive topical therapy with antiamoebic agents. The patient underwent phototherapeutic keratectomy with topical mitomycin C 0.02% application. The maximum stromal depth of cysts measured by IVCM was 80 µm, 100 µm, and 240 µm, and the stromal ablation depths were 80 µm, 100 µm, and 100 µm, respectively. RESULTS: In all 3 eyes, AK resolved after a single excimer laser application, and topical treatment was gradually discontinued within 6 weeks afterward. In 1 eye, penetrating corneal transplantation was performed 6 weeks after phototherapeutic keratectomy because of ongoing severe corneal pain. IVCM and histology of the corneal transplant did not reveal any Acanthamoeba cysts within the excised corneal button. No recurrence was observed during the follow-up period of 19 to 34 months. CONCLUSIONS: IVCM-guided phototherapeutic keratectomy with mitomycin C 0.02% seems to be a safe and successful approach for the treatment of AK, especially in cases of resistance to topical treatment. Corneal IVCM should be performed before laser application to measure cyst depth, determine ablation depth, and assess postoperative treatment success.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of gallic acid or its combination with glibenclamide on some biochemical markers and histology of the cornea of streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. METHODS: Following induction of diabetes, 24 male albino rats were divided into four groups of six rats each. Groups 1 and 2 (control and diabetic) received rat pellets and distilled water; group 3 (gallic acid) received rat pellets and gallic acid (10 mg/kg, orally) dissolved in the distilled water; and group 4 (gallic acid + glibenclamide) received rat pellets, gallic acid (10 mg/kg, orally), and glibenclamide (5 mg/kg, orally) dissolved in the distilled water. The treatments were administered for three months after which the rats were sacrificed after an overnight fast. Blood and sera were collected for the determination of biochemical parameters, while their eyes were excised for histology. RESULTS: STZ administration to the rats induced insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, microprotenuria, loss of weight, oxidative stress, inflammation, and alteration of their cornea histology, which was abolished following supplementation with gallic acid or its combination with glibenclamide. CONCLUSIONS: The study showed the potentials of gallic acid and glibenclamide in mitigating systemic complication and histological changes in the cornea of diabetic rats induced with STZ.

OBJECTIVE: To raise awareness of conditions that can tomographically mimic corneal ectasia and describe the actions required to avoid misdiagnosis. METHODS: We report a retrospective case series of seven patients presenting at two tertiary care centers in Israel with a presumed diagnosis of keratoconus or post-refractive ectasia. Upon further examination, the ectasia diagnosis was reconsidered and eventually ruled out. RESULTS: Included were ten eyes of seven patients. Cases included bilateral diffuse Salzmann's nodular degeneration, ophthalmoplegia with strabismus which precluded proper fixation during the acquisition of tomography images, two cases of incorrect Pentacam parameter settings, a patient with a history of hyperopic laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) treatment in one eye and myopic LASIK in the fellow eye, a case of old post-photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) stromal haze, and a patient with posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy. CONCLUSIONS: Tomography patterns mimicking corneal ectasia can appear in patients without ectatic pathology. The comprehensive ophthalmologist should be aware of such cases as they may substantially alter the treatment course and prognosis of these patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and histopathological features of a case of xanthogranulomatous keratitis in a mixed-breed dog. ANIMAL: Mixed-breed dog. CLINICAL PRESENTATION, PROGRESSION, AND PROCEDURES: An 11-year-old spayed female mixed-breed dog was presented for mild blepharospasm, corneal cloudiness, and increasing conjunctival hyperemia OD. Ophthalmic examination revealed multifocal pink and cream-colored consolidated corneal infiltrative lesions and generalized neovascularization with suspected diagnosis of stromal abscessation. There was no improvement after 1 month of medical management, so a keratectomy was performed, and corneal tissue was sent for histopathological evaluation. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The nonulcerative keratitis was refractive to medical management including topical and systemic antibiotics, topical antifungal, and systemic anti-inflammatory, so keratectomy was performed. Histopathologic diagnosis of xanthogranulomatous keratitis was made 1 week postoperatively. The patient was prescribed 0.05% difluprednate ophthalmic emulsion and 0.2% tacrolimus ophthalmic ointment (initially q 8 h, OD). The difluprednate was tapered and discontinued after 2 months, but the tacrolimus was continued (q 12 h, OD). No lesion recurrence had been documented 1 year postoperatively. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: There has been little published on canine xanthogranulomas, especially in veterinary ophthalmology. Ocular xanthogranulomas have been reportedly found intraocularly and at the ocular surface. Histologically, they are characterized by well-delineated nodules that contain histiocytes and abundant lipid-laden macrophages. The treatment in this clinical case was surgical excision followed with topical immunosuppression/anti-inflammatory therapy with no recurrence 1 year postoperatively. Xanthogranulomatous keratitis should be an added differential diagnosis when nonulcerative keratitis is found on examination, specifically with consolidated, corneal infiltrate and minimal pain.

The cornea is a fundamental ocular tissue for the sense of sight. Thanks to it, the refraction of two-thirds of light manages to participate in the visual process and protect against mechanical damage. Because it is transparent, avascular, and innervated, the cornea comprises five main layers: Epithelium, Bowman's layer, stroma, Descemet's membrane, and endothelium. Each layer plays a key role in the functionality and maintenance of ocular tissue, providing unique ultrastructural and biomechanical properties. Bullous Keratopathy (BK) is an endothelial dysfunction that leads to corneal edema, loss of visual acuity, epithelial blisters, and severe pain, among other symptoms. The corneal layers are subject to changes in their biophysical properties promoted by Keratopathy. In this context, the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) technique in air was used to investigate the anterior epithelial surface and the posterior endothelial surface, healthy and with BK, using a triangular silicone tip with a nominal spring constant of 0.4 N/m. Six human corneas (n = 6) samples were used for each analyzed group. Roughness data, calculated by third-order polynomial adjustment, adhesion, and Young's modulus, were obtained to serve as a comparison and identification of morphological and biomechanical changes possibly associated with the pathology, such as craters and in the epithelial layer and exposure of a fibrotic layer due to loss of the endothelial cell wall. Endothelial cell membrane area and volume data were calculated, obtaining a relevant comparison between the control and patient. Such results may provide new data on the physical properties of the ocular tissue to understand the physiology of the cornea when it has pathology.

Purpose: Diabetic keratopathy (DK) is a vision-threatening disease that occurs in people with diabetes. Mounting evidence indicates that microRNAs (miRNAs) are indispensable in nerve regeneration within DK. Herein, the role of miRNAs associated with DK, especially focusing on autophagy and apoptosis regulation, was investigated. Methods: To identify differentially expressed miRNAs, we performed miRNA sequencing on trigeminal ganglion (TG) tissues derived from streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetic mellitus (T1DM) and normal mice. MiR-144-3p was chosen for the subsequent experiments. To explore the regulatory role of miR-144-3p in DK, miRNA antagomir was utilized to inhibit miR-144-3p expression. Bioinformatic tools were used to predict the target genes of miR-144-3p, and a dual-luciferase reporter assay was then applied for validation. Autophagy and apoptosis activities were measured utilizing TUNEL staining, immunofluorescence staining, and Western blotting. Results: Overall, 56 differentially expressed miRNAs were detected in diabetic versus control mice. In the diabetic mouse TG tissue, miR-144-3p expression was aberrantly enhanced, whereas decreasing its expression contributed to improved diabetic corneal re-epithelialization and nerve regeneration. Fork-head Box O1 (FOXO1) was validated as a target gene of miR-144-3p. Overexpression of FOXO1 could prevent both inadequate autophagy and excessive apoptosis in DK. Consistently, a specific miR-144-3p inhibition enhanced autophagy and prevented apoptosis in DK. Conclusions: In this study, our research confirmed the target binding relationship between miR-144-3p and FOXO1. Inhibiting miR-144-3p might modulate autophagy and apoptosis, which could generate positive outcomes for corneal nerves via targeting FOXO1 in DK.

Severe corneal disorders due to infective aetiologies, trauma, chemical injuries, and chronic cicatricial inflammations, are among vision-threatening pathologies leading to permanent corneal scarring. The whole cornea or lamellar corneal transplantation is often used as a last resort to restore vision. However, limited autologous tissue sources and potential adverse post-allotransplantation sequalae urge the need for more robust and strategic alternatives. Contemporary management using cultivated corneal epithelial transplantation has paved the way for utilizing stem cells as a regenerative potential. Humaninduced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) can generate ectodermal progenitors and potentially be used for ocular surface regeneration. This review summarizes the process of corneal morphogenesis and the signaling pathways underlying the development of corneal epithelium, which is key to translating the maturation and differentiation process of hiPSCs in vitro. The current state of knowledge and methodology for driving efficient corneal epithelial cell differentiation from pluripotent stem cells are highlighted.

It concerns three siblings (two 28 year old twin boys and a 25 year old woman) who presented a previous history of rupture of eyeball in one eye and very poor vision in the other. At the first ophthalmoscopic and instrumental evaluation, three patients presented with bluish sclera and keratoglobus in the intact eye. A genetic analysis with whole exome sequencing was then performed on the three siblings, identifying a biallelic variant of the PRDM5 gene that led to the diagnosis of Brittle Cornea Syndrome (BCS), a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by corneal thinning and blue sclera. To preserve the only intact eye from possible breakage, the three siblings were trained in using protective measures (polycarbonate goggles etc.) to carry out close monitoring of symptoms and were asked to continue with follow-up visits for ocular and systemic diseases associated with BCS. Given the poor best corrected visual acuity achievable with glasses and contact lenses, penetrating keratoplasty was performed, achieving good visual acuity maintained in the 2-year follow-up in two of the three patients. Knowledge of this pathology and its clinical manifestations is essential for early diagnosis and correct management of this rare but very debilitating pathology. To our knowledge, this is the first case series of BCS reported in an Albanian population.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate alterations in epithelial thickness during corneal degeneration, corneal pigmentation, and additional features observed through spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in brachycephalic dogs. ANIMALS AND PROCEDURES: The study used 55 eyes from 49 brachycephalic dogs that underwent OCT-containing ophthalmic examinations. The examined eyes were classified into corneal degeneration, corneal pigmentation, and normal groups according to corneal lesions. For each eye, corneal epithelial thickness (CET) in the central cornea and maximum limbal epithelial thickness (maxLET) in 4 quadrants of limbus (superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal) were measured from OCT images. Additional abnormal findings on OCT images, including irregular epithelium, subepithelial hyperreflectivity, and conjunctivochalasis, were also recorded. RESULTS: The corneal degeneration group had significantly thinner nasal and temporal maxLETs than that of the normal group (p < .001). In the central corneal OCT image of the corneal degeneration group, an irregular epithelium was observed in 70.6% and subepithelial hyperreflectivity in 82.4%, both of which were significantly higher than the normal group (p < .001). In a comparative analysis, the nasal, temporal, and inferior maxLETs were significantly thinner in the corneal pigmentation group than those in the normal group (p < .001, p < .001, and p = .01, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Morphological changes in the limbal epithelium were observed in dogs with corneal degeneration and corneal pigmentation. LET reduction could be associated with their pathogenesis and would be valuable as an additional parameter for corneal diseases.
